There is absolutely no reason why the English should be so hostile over such a meaningless thing. There are more serious concerns in life that you should delegate your attentions to than jokes. Americans very seldom get offended by jokes and insults made on American culture. I think one reason for that being that there is something inherently futile in assuming a universal about the most diverse culture on the planet.
