Video Description:
BIG BAD JOHN
is a country song originally performed by
Jimmy Dean and composed by Dean and Roy
Acuff. Released in September 1961, by the
beginning of November it went to number one
on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Dean the
1962 Grammy Award for Best Country &Western Recording.
* The Jordainares sing backup on this song.
* Floyd Cramer was to play piano backup but suggested that a hammer hitting steel would be better! Floyd has no ego problem. Everyone wanted this to be a big hit for Jimmy, one he badly needed.

--LYRICS--
Big John
Big John
Every morning at the mine you could see him arrive
He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
Everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big John
Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John
Nobody seemed to know where John called home
He just drifted into town and stayed all alone
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy
If ya spoke at all, ya just said hi to Big John
Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight o'er a cajun queen
And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Lousianna fella to the promised land, Big John
Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John
Then came the day at the bottom of the mine
When a timber cracked and men started cryin'
Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought they'd breathed their last, 'cept John
Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell
Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well
Grabbed the saggin' timber and gave out with a groan
And like a giant oak tree, just stood there alone, Big John
Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John
And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove
Then a miner yelled out, there's a light up above
And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave
now there's only one left down there to save, Big John
With jacks and timbers they started back down
Then came that rumble way down in the ground
As smoke and gas belched outta the mine
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big John
Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John
Now, they never re-opened that worthless pit
They just placed a marble stand in front of it
These few words are written on that stand,
At the bottom of this mine lies one Hell of a man, Big John
Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John
The song and its sequel tell a story typical of American folklore, reminiscent of Paul Bunyan or John Henry.
Big Bad John was also the title of a 1990 television movie starring Dean.

Hardly Southern "Rap", I'm from South Western Pennsylvania, and my great-grandfather died in a mine accident, my grandfather worked in the mines, and now my cousin does, and I reclaim mine refuse to get coal, it's a way of life here so you can have electric and steel. I live in a little coal mining town, these things happened, many men died. It would be great if you wouldn't make light of it.

Caterpillar955, thanks for your comments. I appreciate what you and your relatives have done for this country. My grandfather worked in the mines and mother was born in one of the coal camps in southwest Virginia.

The man who play Hoss Cartright, a big guy, played in a movie about Big John. Dan Blocker was his name just remembered on a show called Bonanza.
I could always picture him moving those timbers in the colapsed mine

"southern rap". Haha. Yes, I suppose it is.
Am I correct in remembering that the Kennedy For President campaign used this song in some fashion?
Ah! I see this is the "uncensored" version of this song; Dean sings "helluva man" instead of the radio-safe "big, big man".
I'd never even heard THIS version...

Hoss would be a lousy choice for this role.Hoss was jolly and playful-a likable giant.
Big John had a dark violent past. John beat a man to death in New Orleans.John "didn`t say much".If you spoke "at all" to John, "you just said hi".
Hoss grew up at The Ponderosa-one of the Cartwright boys.People loved to talk to Hoss. Hoss loved to talk to people. Unlike Big John.
The only similarity is that both men were big and strong.A much better choice could be be found to play "Big John."

When we were kids we loved this 45 we just about wore it out! We lived on a farm and had a couple of John Deere 4020 tractors, one of which had a turbo,on the front of it in mailbax letters we named it BIG BAD JOHN. It was one hell of a tractor and I always was reminded of the song when smoke and gas belched out of the exhaust while it was put under a load lol! We also enjoyed the song that was on the flip side of BBJ , I Wont Go Hunting With You Jake! I doubt that many have heard it?

Clint Walker would have been a good one to be Big John. If you remember the movie the Dirty Dozen it fits him to a tee except that he was even bigger at 6'6" but in his day was a chiseled fellow. Clint also played Cheyenne in a 50's series by the same name.
