get lined or printing pare, fold it into a triangle. this would make the bottom a thick strip of excess paper. cut it off then you have a square.

You may use printing paper: the thinner it is, the better it is!
As you can see at the end of many of my origami tutorials, with your favorite wordprocessor/graphic program, you may print two squares on a A4 sheet, print it and cut them out - with this method from each A4 sheet you may obtain two figures! -
...or, you may follow mervynkeaunewan's advice, which gives you one square from each sheet of paper.
