im simpy amazed by all of the young drummers over and over againevery drummer clip I watch I see at tleast one clip sayiong Joey Jordison is better than himand opinons are fine but at this point the young ones need to realize that Joey Jordison did not get that way from selling his soul to the devil (although with that band...)he practiced to many who came before him so please fellas appreciate what the guy on the video is doing and if you dont like what it is hes doing explain why

and thats because you've obviously judged mikes drumming from just this video. joey would even admit himself that mike portnoy was a better drummer than he.
mike portnoy plays countless different styles of drumming at a proffessional level whereas joey only plays metal drums. and to the guy you replied to above, playing fast does not make you a good drummer. not by a long shot.

first of all, I don't just listen to jazz, I grew up in the 80s listening to the very first generation of shred, I can listen to and appreciate eerything from Deicide and Pantera to Jay Z and Fucking John Coltrane. Your comment: "playing fast does not make you a good drummer"seemed to slap your opinion in the face because that's all this guy has going for him.
Jim black is not only fast (though he is that fer sure) he is musical! dynamic! his touch is impeccable (seen him live twice...

...and here's what's really important. There is not a drummer alive (and yes that is a challenge i will accept and defend as someone who has a Master in Music Theory undergrad in Jazz performance and 30 years of relentless listening to ALL genres) who has as much independent control over the INFINITE POSSIBLE SUBDIVISION between EVERY BEAT and SUBDIVISION. It's fucking insane! listen to Bloodcount, his group with Time Berne, and you will here not only Hardcore Aggression in a 'jazz' setting...

but you will here limbs that seem to have born of four different individuals wiht four different brains and 4 sets of ears on each one. Now I don't think Jim Black contrives to 'think' of this stuff while playing but imagine a 7 over 8 in the left hand while the right foot is playing 1/4 note triplets against a kick that is 'stumbling through a jagged four notes per dotted quarter and a right hand that is rolling from the the snare to the toms and back.
The guy is the sickest.

it's just not neanderthal heavy! It's not played in straight 1/8 time with idiot hair band derived power-chord and shred licks over top. with that horrid mid-scooped elctric guitar tone they all use, and it's not so mono dynamic. uhhhm like this above. a typical jim black recording probably has 3 or 4 mics on the drums...TOPS!
and this spot-mic'd super-compressed stuff just never breathes...anyway, getting carried away; )

and you've pretty much just described everything mike portnoy can play too. and the i didn't 'slap my opinion in the face' because this is a tiny snippet of his playing, and probably one of the worst. generally hes a slower drummer combining pretty much every style of music into his playing. listen to liquid tension experiment and you'll see what i mean. and when you say jim black is the best drummer alive...your still only putting out an opinion no matter how much you 'try' to defend that
