Larry Bird is an example of hard work can do
He was slow and He couldnt jump but he was always in the right place at the right time. He had a great Basket Ball Mind.

yeah true but thats also like saying if kobe had larry birds basketball mind he would be unstoppable.

Your right about Bird. Magic is also an example of what hard work and intelligence can do. He wasnt that much more gifted physically than Larry yet he was just as great. They both lived to play the game.
At their respective ... ( 2 weeks ago by ExplosiveThinMan)
At their respective peaks they were very close. As a Laker fan and a fan of Magic Id have to say Bird was better. The Celtics and Bird won 3 world titles and he won 3 MVPs in a row 84 85 86.

Ah....I hate to break it to you but Pat Riley was a great coach who coinded the phrased "no rebounds no rings" Riley knew how to motivate and he coached defense.
He won a championship in Miami a couple of years ago.
they will go down ... ( 2 weeks ago by tin2975tin)
they will go down as the greatest in their positions. they literally saved the league from bankruptcy and paved the way for the jordans, barkleys, thomas, olajuwons, drexlers, karl malone. when both retired, nba basketball was never the same again. there are still the lebrons, kobes, dwades, cp3's but they will find it hard to match the legacy of these 2 legends. they played basketball the way it should be played. team game.

Yep. Lakers were helped by the 2-3-2, in 85, otherwise the Celts may have three-peated. By 87 the Celtics were hampered by injuries, and by 88 Detroit was simply better.

The Lakers did win it on Boston`s homecourt in 1985. I dont think you can take anything away from the Lakers that year. They were determined to redeem themselves that series. LA won two game on Boston`s homecourt.

Don't lump Jordan in with the rest. Jordan had his own era and contributions to basketball. Jordan was the best there ever was
MVPs ...if your ... ( 1 week ago by hypermonkey26)
MVPs ...if your basing it on that then yeah.
3-1 Johnson has beaten Bird in a championship series or game.
Its open to interpretation really.
Im just basing it ... ( 1 week ago by ExplosiveThinMan)
Im just basing it on what I saw of them. Its splitting hairs really.
Magic as good as he was really wasnt the leader of the Lakers until 1987. That was when he won his first MVP. Up until then Jabbar was the leader of that team and he was the one they went to in the clutch situation. Kareem carried much of the halfcourt offense.
Bird on the other hand was always the man in Boston. No doubt. He was a great clutch shooter and his passing was as good as Magic`s he was a superior rebounder
Magic Johnson.... ... ( 1 week ago by hypermonkey26)
Magic Johnson....his rookie year he came through when Kareem got injured in the championship. He may not have been the leader but he sure as hell was detrimental to the team's success. Mchale is in the top 50 basketball player of all time category. He played along side Bird. Bird didn't do it alone neither did Magic. It's a matter of opinion and splitting hairs I'll agree.
Johnson like Bird, willed their teams to championships. Johnson was the spirit and morale of his team.
You have to keep in ... ( 1 week ago by hypermonkey26)
You have to keep in mind that team dynamics are setup differently. If a Lakers team is built around Kareem and it WORKS...why change it? Why does Majic have to become leader right away to prove that he's just as good as Bird was? The bottom line is both teams were packed with talent and both players heavily contributed to their dynasties.
Players are not forced to get better until they have to. Magic didn't have to step it up as leader until he was forced too. Again he was the heart and soul.
BTW, Michael Jordan ... ( 1 week ago by hypermonkey26)
BTW, Michael Jordan put up outstanding stats in the 80s but never won a championship until the 90s when he played unselfish ball. We all know Jordan is the greatest but we don't base it on his stats alone but on his teamplay as well. Players are assigned different roles on a team and stats may reflect that. College football is a perfect example of how numbers do not always determine the best team.
Bottomline, Magic and Larry are equally talented and assimilated differently into their teams.
Magic shouldnt have ... ( 1 week ago by ExplosiveThinMan)
Magic shouldnt have channged anything he was about the team.
Im not saying Magic wasnt great just that Id give Bird an edge overall. He could do more and beat you in more ways.
Your entitled to your opinion many people feel Magic was better. I saw both of them at their peaks and if I was starting a team Id go with Bird first.
Thats my opinion. They both accomplished alot.
In the `84 finals ... ( 1 week ago by ExplosiveThinMan)
In the `84 finals the Lakers were running all over Boston.
Bird took the leadership of his team. It started in the lockeroom and he backed it up on the court.
In that series Larry did everything. He was the run away MVP of the Finals. That was a series that was stackd with many great players.
On the other hand Magic cost his team in many ways. His turnovers and missed free throws He basically choked. The pressure got to him.
Bird willed his team to victory that time.
In `1985 Johnson ... ( 1 week ago by ExplosiveThinMan)
In `1985 Johnson cameback and played very well but Kareem dominated the series and was the biggest factor in LA championship. The whole team had a tougher attitude.
I would put both guys in the top 5-6 players alltime.
As far as Jordan goes he could have been the greatest but regardless of what the modern media says there are a handful of guys that belong in the conversation. Jabbar, Wilt, Russell, Oscar, Bird and Magic.
"regardless what ... ( 1 week ago by hypermonkey24)
"regardless what the modern media says there are a handful of guys that belong in the conversation"
not really. When the best (ie Bird and Magic) say that Jordan was the best....it ain't just a media thing. When a Detroit head coach who beat the 90s bulls team 3 times says Michael "embarassed the league"......it ain't just the media.
Wilt maybe held the dominance Jordan had in his era but he ain't the GOAT.
Not just Magic ... ( 1 week ago by hypermonkey24)
Not just Magic Worthy cost his team as well. Boston put an ass woopin on the Lakers that year. It was Birds and the Celtics time to shine.
But like I said....Johnson didn't get EVEN better until he was FORCED too. Bird made that possible.
Whether u like it ... ( 1 week ago by tin2975tin)
Whether u like it or not, Jordans career will forever be intertwined with that of Bird and Magic. Jordan didnt get the title of best player in the nba until the two retired. Thats a good 8 yrs of playing second banana to Bird and Magic. But not to take anything away from Jordan, he is arguably the GOAT. How i wish a time machine can be invented and see how his Bulls the 91-93 and the 96-98 teams will fare against the 80's celtics and lakers. This is going to be a dandy.
Magic knew that the ... ( 1 week ago by tin2975tin)
Magic knew that the team belongs to Kareem. Magic knew Kareem had great pride that he will not just give his mantle as team captain to him. But fans and nba critics knew more that the team belongs to Magic the time he set his foot on the court. He is the key to the engine of the Lakers offensive juggernaut. Kareem is just a part of it. A major part of it. Kareem is the greatest center of all time becoz of Magic, the greatest laker of all time made it all possible.
Riley also coined ... ( 2 days ago by MANSHOTS)
Riley also coined the phrase "three-peat", which came to him in his dreams during michael jordan's first run, and got his connection in the patent office to notarize it before the eggs benedict arrived so that any time a major team fights like heck to hang onto a title, he collects. That's flashy coaching with winners. Chuck Daly's motto was DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE. That's a true winning coach, who was even able to shut up Dennis Rodman unlike his future coach Phil Jaaaaaaaaackson
Jabbar was already ... ( 2 days ago by ExplosiveThinMan)
Jabbar was already a lock for the Hall of Fame before Magic ever played his first game with the Lakers. From 1970 to 1980 Kareem won 6 MVPs and a world championship.
I agree Magic was a special player and he actually made the game fun for Kareem again and allowed him to continue to play at a high level.
Bottom line is that Kareem made Magic`s game easier and vice versa.
